Three hundred years ago, Raja Hindu Singh laid the foundatons of a village
called "Kanhapur" on the auspicious occasion of Janamashtami. Three hundred
years hence after its foundation, it is a city called Kanpur with national
and international importance.
In all these years, Cawnpore has continued to change, transform and develop. However, its contribution to the freedom struggle, its importance of industry and the glory of its monuments remains unsung. Of all the progress that occoured in Kanpur for all these years, ENTERTAINMENT certainly set its feet. Kanpur initially was the birthplace of "Noutunki" - a combination of music and drams, which fascinated people for years before the advent of advanced modes of entertaiment. Today "Noutunki" has subdued to the lower sections of society. Cinema came up and engulfed all other modes of entertainment. On date, kanpur has a number of about 30 cinema halls. The earliest of these was established as long as in 1921-22 by the name of Baikunth which later changed to Capital. Then came Golden and Moti Mahal. The talkie movie "Alam Ara" was shown in 1937. Apart from this, Kanpur is home to all cultural extravaganze. It has an exclusive Ram Lella ground in the heart of the city for an exuberant fiesta on Dussehra. The fire works are gorgeous and there is a large audience to watch the effigies of the demon kings exploded. Moreover "Daandiya" has emerged as a craze for the "nouraat" celebrations. Besides, Kanpur has a number of Clubs is residents-be it the Cawnpore Club, The Rotary Club, the lions Club or the latest status club. Following the footmarks of the bigger Indian cities and influenced by the Western world, Kanpur now orgranises Trade fairs and Exhibitions, stages Fashion shows and Beauty peageants and have youngsters dancing to the tune of fast music. Yes, Kanpur also has a Bowling Alley and a cople of dicotheques. Gone are the day when kanpur was a place of boredom; from a small village on th Ganges, it has transformed into a happening city. Its soil has suffered the strokes of British, absorbed the bood of hundreds of innocent people and given birth to martyrus like Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi before the current day Kanpur was born. I love Kanpur Very Much... |

Admist the concert jungle of Kanpur, the city once known as the Manchester
of India, an international market for the leather industry and a growing
metro, their pollution has tiptoed its way into the life of every commoner,
where the wish for a "Clean & Green Kanpu" remains a distant dream,
Green park happens to be misanthropist's paradise.
A large area admeasuring about 20 acres, barricaded by a high wall and shady trees, a work force to tend to the lawns and a management committee to see to its development - Green Park today depicts an entirely different picture. History has it that is came up during the British rule. This huge piece of Nazool land was leased out to the B.I.C. to be maintained as the playground for the Europeans residing in its vicinity where several other bills were also located. Yes we're talking of the modern day Civil Lines. The park then was an oval shaped ground, only enclosed by a hedge, behind which stood huge trees. In between the play field and hedge ran a horse riding track which was used by the police and administrative officers. However, with time, this track was lost and became a road around the park. The Brithishers founded the Cawnpore Sports Club, exclusively for themselves and the ground was used to play hockey, rugby and tennis. Suprisingly, it was not initially used for cricket. The origin of this club dated back to more than a century, making a historic landmark of Green Park. Gradually, Green Park became a local venue of football, hockey & Cricket matches. Tennis shifted to the sprawling lawns of the B.I.C. bungalows and the Lal Imli club. With independence, a trust was formed to take a charge of the park. Some times in the late 1940s or early 50s, Green Park hosted its first international cricket match and became an international test venue. Credit goes to the famous Gupta brother, Ram Ratan & Ram prasad of Laxmi Ratan Cotton Mills who organized this Game. Kanpur was soon gifted with a small stadium, built up and slowly developed into a regular playing area and recognized as a permanent center by the B.C.C.I. beside Bombay, Delhi, Calcutta & Madras. Today, the park has a capacity of fifty thousand spectators with a beautiful pavilion and an indoor sports hostel and coaches for practically all sports. |
